Rami Mehio

Rami is the head of software and Informatics development at illumina. He joined illumina in 2018 as part of the Edico Genome acquisition where he led the development of DRAGEN BioIT solution, as head of engineering. Today, Rami oversees instrument software development, cloud platforms, bioinformatics and clinical software. Over the past few years, Rami’s organization has helped establish illumina as a leading provider in informatics, delivering innovative, reliable software products developed in deep collaborations with KOLs.

Accomplishments at illumina under Rami’s leadership include: 

Recruiting a world-class team for informatics o Increasing direct software’s contribution to Illumina’s annual revenue sixfold over the past three years 

  • Establishing partnerships with the Broad Institute, GeL, AstraZeneca and Baylor college of medicine and other key opinion leaders to that drive informatics forward. 

  • Unifying all bioinformatics solutions at Illumina under the DRAGEN framework and establishing DRAGEN as an accurate, trusted and widely used pipeline 

  • Embedding DRAGEN in illumina’s NextSeq2k and NovaSeqX sequencers 

  • Achieving consecutive wins at the Precision FDA accuracy challenges

  • Rolling out COVIDSeq software in 2020 powered by DRAGEN, to serve the testing and surveillance market with over three million samples analyzed 

  • Launching the illumina Connected Software (ICS) suite in late 2021, forming the backbone of illumina’s end-to-end solutions:

    • Data platform: Illumina Connected Analytics

    • Secondary analysis: DRAGEN

    • Tertiary insights: Illumina Connected Insight

    • LIMS: Clarity 


Previously, Rami held various management and technical roles at Broadcom as Director of Modem and RF Software (2008-2016), and Nokia as Software Manager, PHY/RF (2003-2006). Rami holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Signal Processing (1995-1997) and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (1991-1994) from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
